When ounces are top of mind this is going to be the layer you grab for your kid. Polartec Alpha Direct is a very unique fabric that is incredibly warm and light. Despite being quite fluffy forest debris brushes off of it surprisingly well and it has held up well to a summer of my kid foraging deep in the brush for huckleberries. It is not quite as durable as Micro Grid but it is much lighter and warmer for the weight. Paired with a windproof layer it can't be beat for warmth to weight. Highly recommend if you're going backpacking and carrying gear for everyone. It's light enough to even toss in my kid's pack, a 2T is only 2.3 ounces!
